Whether you're starting sixth form or heading into your next year at uni, your phone is working harder than ever. It's your notepad, your AI study assistant, your camera, your alarm clock, your entertainment and your social life – all in one device.

We've rounded up the best student phones available right now in 2026, with honest takes on what each one does best. From AI tools for studying to battery life that'll see you through a full festival weekend. Whatever your budget, we've got some solid picks.

What to look for in a student phone

Top features that make the most difference are:

  • Battery life – all-day power is non-negotiable. You don't want to be hunting for a charger between lectures or running low at the end of the night

  • AI tools – summarising notes, drafting emails, live translation and photo editing are all useful for study and everyday life

  • Camera – for social content, documenting coursework and capturing the moments that matter

  • Durability – drop resistance and water resistance ratings matter to keep your phone running for longer

  • Value – you don't need flagship money to get a brilliant phone in 2026

Apple iPhone 17 – Best overall

Price: From £799 | Best for: iOS users, content creators and Apple ecosystem fans

Five smartphones displaying various appsLaunched in September 2025, iPhone 17 is the most well-rounded student phone you can buy right now. Apple upgraded to a larger 6.3-inch 120Hz ProMotion OLED display (finally matching Android flagships), added a new 18MP front camera with Centre Stage and put the A19 chip under the hood — one of the fastest processors in any smartphone. Apple Intelligence has advanced significantly in iOS 26 too.

The good stuff:

  • Writing Tools in Apple Intelligence let you summarise lecture notes, proofread essays and rewrite content directly in any app

  • 18MP selfie camera with Centre Stage automatically keeps you in frame – ideal for filming content, online meetings or video calls

  • ProMotion 120Hz display with Always-On makes everything feel incredibly smooth, and the 3000-nit peak brightness is the brightest iPhone screen yet

  • Action Button and Camera Control give quick access to your most-used tools, fully customisable to your workflow

  • MagSafe means wireless charging, wallets and accessories all snap on magnetically – no faffing with cables

  • IP68 water resistance: durable enough to survive the accidental spill or the inevitable freshers' week incident

  • Seven years of software updates for top performance

Heads up: The iPhone 17 starts at £799 – the biggest ask on this list. For a better price point iPhone, it’s worth exploring iPhone 17e (from £599, launched March 2026), which offers Apple Intelligence and MagSafe with the same A19 chip.

Apple iPhone 17e – Best value Apple phone for students

Price: From £599 | Best for: Apple fans on a tighter budget, anyone upgrading from an older iPhone

Three smartphones display different screensLaunched in March 2026, iPhone 17e is the new entry point into Apple's lineup – and it's a genuinely strong option for students who want Apple Intelligence and the iPhone ecosystem without paying flagship prices. It runs the same A19 chip as the iPhone 17, includes MagSafe and starts with 256GB of storage – double its predecessor at the same £599 price. The compromise? No ProMotion display (it's capped at 60Hz) and a single-lens rear camera system.

The good stuff:

  • Powered by the A19 chip – the same engine as the flagship iPhone 17, which means full Apple Intelligence and no performance compromises

  • MagSafe wireless charging and accessories are fully supported, matching the iPhone 17 experience

  • 256GB of storage as standard at this price is exceptional – plenty of space for apps, photos and downloaded content

  • Apple Intelligence Writing Tools, priority notifications and AI-powered Siri work exactly as they do on the iPhone 17

  • Clean, simple iOS 26 experience with no bloat

  • Long-term software support in line with Apple's other current iPhone models

Heads up: The 60Hz display and single rear camera are the main trade-offs versus iPhone 17. If you're a heavy video shooter or want a smoother-feeling display, stretch to iPhone 17. But for most students, iPhone 17e hits the sweet spot.

Google Pixel 10a – Best for AI features and value

Price: From £499 | Best for: AI-first users, Android fans and mid-range budgets

Hand holding a blue Google smartphoneThe Pixel 10a launched in February 2026 and has already earned its spot as the smartest value phone of the year. It's powered by the same Tensor G4 chip as Google's flagship Pixel 9 range, which means you get the full Gemini AI experience at half the price. The 5100mAh battery comfortably lasts 30+ hours, and the camera consistently delivers stunning results thanks to Google's AI-driven image processing.

The good stuff:

  • Gemini is deeply integrated across all your apps – ask it questions, summarise content, help draft emails or use it directly in Google Maps, Calendar and YouTube to make life easier

  • Camera Coach (new for 2026) uses Gemini to read the scene and suggest the best angle and lighting before you shoot – perfect if you want better photos without becoming a photography expert

  • Best Take and Add Me features mean everyone is in the group photo and everyone's expression is their best one – no more awkward re-shoots

  • 5100mAh Adaptive Battery rated for 30+ hours and an astonishing 120 hours with Extreme Battery Saver on

  • Satellite SOS support comes to the A-series for the first time – contact emergency services even without cellular coverage, useful when travelling or at remote festivals

  • IP68 water resistance and Gorilla Glass 7i,  the most durable A-series Pixel yet

  • Seven years of guaranteed software updates – exceptional long-term value at this price

Heads up: The Pixel 10a uses the same Tensor G4 chip as its predecessor, the Pixel 9a, rather than upgrading to the newer Tensor G5. Real-world performance is excellent, but on paper it's worth noting. Charging has improved to 45W, a meaningful upgrade over Pixel 9a's slower speeds.

Samsung Galaxy S26 – Best camera and premium Android experience

Price: From £799 | Best for: Photography, content creation, multitasking and power users

Samsung Galaxy S26Announced at Galaxy Unpacked in February 2026 and available since March, the Galaxy S26 is Samsung's flagship for the year. Samsung kept the price steady at £799 – a smart move in a year of rising costs elsewhere – while upgrading the battery to 4300mAh and pushing its Galaxy AI features further than ever. The result is a slim, premium phone with an excellent triple camera, a beautiful 6.3-inch AMOLED display and the most polished AI suite on Android.

The good stuff:

  • Triple camera (50MP main, 12MP ultrawide and 10MP telephoto) delivers outstanding photos and 4K video – excellent for students serious about photography or content creation

  • Galaxy AI's Photo Assist lets you type what you want to change in a photo — add objects, restore details, change styles, all directly on your phone

  • Now Nudge analyses your day and proactively surfaces relevant information at the right moment, so you're always one step ahead

  • Voice Transcription in the Voice Recorder app automatically transcribes and translates lectures, meetings and calls – a genuine study game-changer

  • Circle to Search lets you highlight anything on your screen, like text, images and objects plus you can search Google instantly, without switching apps

  • New for 2026: Quick Share now works with AirDrop, so you can share photos and files between Galaxy and iPhone users wirelessly without the internet

  • 7 years of OS and security updates

Heads up: Battery life (4300mAh) is better than the Galaxy S25 but still trails the Pixel 10a and Galaxy A57 on raw capacity. If you're going to be away from a charger for extended periods, consider the Galaxy S26 Plus (from around £1,049) with its 4900mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy A57 – Best battery and best value mid-range

Price: From £529 | Best for: Students who need all-day (and all-night) battery life

Samsung Galaxy A57The Galaxy A57 launched in April 2026 as Samsung's most capable mid-range phone of the year, succeeding the popular Galaxy A56. It's noticeably slimmer and lighter than its predecessor (6.9mm and 179g), packs a big battery and brings Samsung's Awesome Intelligence AI suite – including the new Voice Transcription feature for lecture notes, to a price point that's far more student-friendly than the Galaxy S26. If you want a reliable Samsung experience without the flagship price tag, this is it.

The good stuff:

  • Large battery paired with 45W fast charging for quick top-ups between commitments – ideal for long days on campus or at a festival

  • Voice Transcription automatically converts lecture recordings and voicemails to text – brilliant for note-taking without missing what's being said

  • AI Select (via a long press on the Edge Panel) surfaces smart actions directly on screen, so you can extract text, search content or create posts without switching between apps

  • 6.7-inch 120Hz Super AMOLED+ display with Vision Booster – vivid, bright and easy to read outdoors

  • 256GB storage as standard, you won't need to think about space

  • IP67 water resistance and Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection

  • Six years of OS and security updates

Heads up: The Galaxy A57 has seen a price increase over last year's Galaxy A56 (£529 vs £499). The Samsung Galaxy A37 (from £399) is worth considering if you want to spend less – it shares a similar design and the same Awesome Intelligence features at a lower price, with a slightly less powerful chip.
