How do I upgrade my device?

Help and support

Are you on a device plan or Pay Monthly contract? Once you reach the end and everything is paid off, you may be eligible to upgrade your device. It means you have the chance to get the latest handsets with the coolest new features.

In this help guide, we answer all the important questions you might have about upgrading – and when you'll be able to do so.

When can I upgrade my phone?

The quickest way to find out when you can upgrade is by signing in to My O2.

If you've already paid off your device plan, you'll be able to upgrade your device at no extra cost. The same applies if your contract is now at an end.

Upgrading on O2 Refresh

If you're on O2 Refresh, you can upgrade whenever you like if you pay off the rest of your device plan. You won't even need to pay anything upfront for your new device.

If you took out an O2 Refresh contract after 17 December 2021, your airtime plan and device plan will unlink. When this happens, you'll have a few options:

  • Keep both plans as they are

  • Cancel your airtime plan and keep paying off your device plan installments as normal

  • Cancel both plans – but you'll need to settle any outstanding amount on your device plan if you choose this option

If you're on a standard (non-O2 Refresh) contract that hasn't ended yet, you might have the option to pay a fee to upgrade early.

O2 Switch Up

With O2 Switch Up, you can swap your current phone for any of the latest and greatest, or for one you’ve been eyeing up for a while, every 90 days. It doesn’t matter how long you’ve got left on your current contract – we’ll pay it off for you.

How do I upgrade my phone on O2?

Just sign in to My O2 to see your available options and to get started. If you need to pay an early upgrade fee, or your remaining device plan balance, it will be added to your basket – along with your upgrade order.

You can also upgrade your O2 phone in one of our stores.

Upgrading your device FAQs

Yes, you can. When your new device arrives, pop your existing SIM into it. If your contract has ended, you'll need to sign up to a new tariff or switch to Pay As You Go to continue using it.

If you need a new SIM because your existing one doesn't fit into your new phone, you can keep your same number by applying for a SIM swap.

You will if you're signing up to a new contract as part of your upgrade.

If you're an O2 Refresh customer and choose to upgrade, you'll be able to go onto a new tariff with a new handset without a credit check. O2 Switch Up customers also don't have to have a credit check to upgrade to a new phone.

If you have O2 Refresh you can pay off the rest of your Device Plan to upgrade whenever you like. If you don't have O2 Refresh, you may be eligible to pay a fee if you want to upgrade early. Sign in to My O2 to see if the option is available – or visit an O2 store.

You don't have to upgrade your handset at the end of your contract (or Device Plan). You could choose to keep it – and upgrade to a SIM Only tariff. It could even save you money depending on your circumstances.
