Everything You Need to Know About the O2 Network

Whether you’re streaming on the train, making calls from home or using mobile data on the move, staying connected matters more than ever. Discover how the O2 mobile network works, what affects signal and performance and how we’re continuing to invest in improving coverage, reliability and capacity across the UK.

A closer look at the O2 network

Mobile networks are complicated but the basic idea is simple, your phone connects wirelessly to nearby mobile infrastructure allowing you to make calls, send messages and access the internet from almost anywhere.

How your phone connects

Step 1 Your phone sends a signal

When you open a website, stream a video or make a call, your phone sends a signal using radio waves to the nearest mobile mast or cell site.

Step 2 The network checks your connection

The nearby cell site communicates with the core network, which checks things like:

  • If your SIM is active

  • Whether you have allowance or credit available

  • If your device is authorised to use satellite connectivity

Step 3 Your request travels through the network

Once connected, your request is securely routed through the network to the internet, another phone or the service you’re trying to access.

Step 4 The response is sent back

The information then travels back through the network and delivered to your phone almost instantly.

Step 5 Your phone stays connected as you move

As you move around, your device automatically switches between nearby cell sites. This process is known as a handover and helps keep calls and data sessions connected while you travel.

What is a cell site?

A cell site (sometimes called a mast) is the infrastructure that allows mobile devices to connect to the network using radio waves.

Cell sites have antennas and electronic equipment which send and receive mobile signals across different network layers like 2G, 4G and 5G.

Different types of cell sites are used depending on the location and demand in the area.

Macro cell sites

These are the large mobile masts or rooftop installations most people recognise. They give wide-area coverage across towns, cities and rural areas.

Small cells/ Pico cells

Small cells are compact mobile sites, often about the size of a shoebox, designed to provide targeted coverage and capacity in busy places.

You’ll often find them attached to lampposts or street furniture in city centres, shopping areas and transport hubs where lots of people are using the network at the same time.

Cells on wheels

These are temporary mobile sites that can be moved to places where additional coverage or capacity is needed for a short period of time.

They are commonly used at festivals, sporting events and seasonal attractions like Winter Wonderland or Glastonbury.

In-building solutions

Mobile signal can sometimes struggle to reach indoors due to thick walls, modern insulation and building materials.

In-building solutions are mobile systems installed inside large venues like shopping centres, hospitals, stadiums and transport hubs to boost indoor coverage and performance.

Understanding coverage, signal and network layers

What does coverage mean?

Coverage refers to the areas where your phone can connect to the mobile network.

If you’re within range of a cell site and there are no major obstructions, your device should be able to get a mobile signal and connect to the network.

Signal strength varies depending on:

  • Buildings and surrounding structures

  • Hills and geography

  • Weather conditions

  • Trees and foliage

  • How far away you are from the nearest mast

If there’s no available signal, your device may show no bars or display No Service. Some devices may also display satellite connectivity options where available.

What are network layers?

Mobile networks are made up of different network layers, including 2G, 4G, 5G and 5G+.

Each layer has different capabilities and coverage footprints:

2G

One of the oldest mobile network technologies. It primarily supports voice and text services, particularly in areas where newer technologies may not yet be available.

4G

Provides fast and reliable mobile internet access, improved call quality and a much better data experience than older technologies.

Today, our 4G network covers more than 99% of the UK outdoor population.

5G

Our newer mobile network layer. Designed to deliver faster speeds, greater capacity and a more reliable experience in busy areas. On average, it's around 50% faster than 4G.

Our 5G network now covers over 87% of the UK outdoor population and it's available in more than 14,700 towns and cities.

5G+

The new name for 5G Standalone, 5G+ is O2’s most advanced mobile network technology.

Unlike standard 5G which uses parts of the 4G network in the background, 5G+ uses the latest end-to-end network infrastructure, helping to deliver:

  • Faster speeds, on average around 50% faster than 4G

  • Lower latency

  • Greater reliability

  • Improved performance in busy areas

We now have the UK’s largest 5G Standalone network, covering over 86% of the UK population.

To use 5G+, you need a compatible device and SIM.

What is spectrum?

The invisible radio waves used to carry signals between your phone and the mobile network.

Different frequencies of spectrum behave differently:

  • Some travel further and improve coverage

  • Others carry more data and improve capacity

The more spectrum available to a network, the more customers it can support at the same time.

Coverage vs capacity

These are often confused, but they mean different things.

Coverage

Whether your phone can connect to the network. When coverage is available, your device will typically display a network indicator such as 4G or 5G.

Capacity

How much data the network can handle at one time. A mast may provide excellent coverage and a strong signal, but if lots of people are connected at the same time, the available capacity must be shared between them. This can sometimes result in slower speeds even though your phone still shows good coverage.

Understanding congestion

Congestion happens when too many people try to use the network in the same place at the same time.

A good way to think about this is like traffic on a motorway:

  • When there are too many cars, traffic slows down

  • If there are too many people using the same mobile site, network performance can slow down

Even when your phone shows a strong signal and good network coverage, this is why you may sometimes experience:

  • Buffering videos

  • Slow downloads

  • Apps not loading properly

Busy places like concerts, stadiums, shopping centres and transport hubs are particularly prone to congestion.

To help tackle this, we continue to invest heavily in adding more network capacity across the UK.

How we’re investing in the network

Keeping up with growing demand

Mobile data usage across the UK continues to grow rapidly as customers stream more video, use cloud services and stay connected on the move.

In 2025 alone, mobile traffic on our network grew by 18%.

To keep up with this demand, we continue to invest heavily in expanding and improving our network infrastructure.

Investing in more capacity

In 2026, Virgin Media O2 is investing £700 million into its mobile network.

This investment is helping us:

  • Add more capacity

  • Expand 5G and 5G+ coverage

  • Improve reliability

  • Reduce congestion

  • Improve performance in busy locations

We’re also deploying more spectrum, upgrading existing sites and rolling out additional small cells across towns and cities.

Improving connectivity where it matters most

We focus our investment in the places you rely on connectivity the most, including:

  • Transport hubs

  • Town and city centres

  • Commuter routes

  • Shopping centres

  • Stadiums

  • Rail routes

This helps us improve the experience in the moments that matter most.

O2 Satellite

While traditional mobile networks cover the vast majority of the UK population, there are still some remote areas where mobile coverage can be difficult to provide using traditional infrastructure alone.

We launched O2 Satellite to provide essential connectivity in some of these harder-to-reach areas by using satellite technology to complement the mobile network.

If you're an eligible customer, you can connect via satellite when you're outside the reach of the mobile network and have a clear view of the sky. This allows you to send messages and access basic data services, such as WhatsApp and weather apps, helping you stay connected in remote locations where traditional mobile coverage may not be available.

O2 Satellite works alongside our existing mobile network and is designed to extend connectivity to some of the UK's most challenging locations.

Common network issues and what you can do

Mobile performance can be affected by many factors, including signal strength, network demand, your location and the device you're using.

Weak or no signal

What causes it?

Weak signal is usually caused by being too far away from a cell site or by objects blocking the radio waves between your phone and the network.

This can include:

  • Thick walls and modern insulation

  • Underground locations such as basements and tube stations

  • Hills and surrounding geography

  • Remote rural locations

What you might notice:

  • No signal bars

  • Calls failing or not connecting

  • Slow or unavailable mobile data

What you can try:

  • Toggle airplane mode on and off

  • Restart your device

  • Move closer to a window or outdoors

  • Check the My Network App or Network Status Checker for known issues in your area

  • Sign up to Keep Me Posted if a fault has been identified

Slow mobile data or buffering

What causes it?

Slow data speeds can be caused by poor signal, temporary faults or network congestion. Congestion happens when lots of people are using the network in the same location at the same time, such as concerts, sporting events, shopping centres or transport hubs.

Even if your phone shows a strong signal, speeds can sometimes slow down if the available capacity is being shared between a large number of users.

What you can try:

  • Restart your device

  • Toggle airplane mode on and off

  • Connect to O2 WiFi or WiFi Extra where available

  • Run a speed test using the My Network App

  • Check the My Network App or Network Status Checker for known issues

Dropped or failed calls

What causes it?

Calls can occasionally drop if signal conditions change, your phone moves between cell sites, or the network experiences temporary congestion or faults.

What you can try:

  • Move to an area with stronger signal

  • Enable WiFi Calling where available

  • Enable 4G Calling on compatible devices

  • Restart your device

  • Check the My Network App or Network Status Checker for known issues

My Network app

Use the My Network app to understand how the network is performing in your area and access useful tools for diagnosing issues. With the app you can:

  • Check the status of the network in your area

  • View coverage maps

  • Run speed tests

  • Report issues with your service and sign up to Keep Me Posted to receive updates about network issues affecting your area

Coverage checker

Use the coverage checker to understand the level of mobile coverage you can expect in a particular location:

  • Check predicted indoor and outdoor coverage

  • Filter coverage between 2G, 4G, 5G, 5G+ and O2 Satellite services

Network status checker

The network status checker can help identify whether there are any known issues affecting service in your area:

  • Check for known network problems

  • View planned engineering work

  • Report issues with your service
