4G explained

Help and support

What is 4G?

4G is the technology that powers most of your everyday mobile data. It lets you browse the web, stream videos, make video calls and use apps smoothly when you’re on the move. Compared to older networks, 4G is faster, more reliable and better at handling lots of people using data at the same time.

4G continues to carry the largest share of mobile data traffic, accounting for around 72% of total monthly usage across the UK (Ofcom Connected Nations 2025).

4G speeds and coverage

4G speeds can vary depending on your location and how many people are using the network nearby. If you’re experiencing issues, you can use our status checker to identify and report any problems.

Investing in our 4G network

Our 4G network already covers over 99% of the UK population, and we continue to invest to make it faster, more reliable and more consistent wherever you are.

We’re focused on improving connectivity in the moments that matter most, whether that’s on railways, along major roads, in busy city centres and stadiums, or in rural and hard-to-reach areas.

Through programmes like the Shared Rural Network, we’re helping bring coverage to places that previously had little or no signal, while also increasing capacity across the network to keep up with growing demand.

As we continue to expand our 5G network, we’re also strengthening 4G, ensuring it remains a reliable foundation for everyday connectivity across the UK.
