Wi-Fi on the iPhone. Frequently asked questions.

What is Wi-Fi and what can I do with it?

Wi-Fi is high speed wireless access to the Internet. Wi-Fi is provided via hotspots that broadcast their signal over a range of 50 to 100 metres. You may have one in your home to provide access to your broadband line and you will find public hotspots in a variety of locations around the country.

iPhone has Wi-Fi built-in so that you can have wireless access to the Internet, view YouTube videos, access maps and directions, get stock quotes and weather information, and even purchase and download music from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store.

How will I know if my iPhone is using Wi-Fi?

You'll know when your iPhone is connected to a Wi-Fi network when you see the following icon in the top left hand corner of the screen.

If you can't see this icon and can see a blue square with or without an 'E' in it, you're not connected to Wi-Fi and are on the EDGE-based O2 data network.

Is Wi-Fi included in my iPhone tariff?

Yes, Wi-Fi is included in your iPhone tariff. O2 has partnered with The Cloud to provide you with unlimited access to over 7,500 public Wi-Fi hotspots across the UK on your iPhone. An excessive usage policy applies.

What is data and Wi-Fi excessive usage?

Your O2 tariff for iPhone allows you unlimited use of O2 UK’s EDGE/ GPRS networks and The Cloud’s UK Wireless LAN network, for personal internet use, email and Visual Voicemail (VVM) on your iPhone only.

All usage must be for your private, personal and non-commercial purposes. You may not use your SIM Card in any other device, or use your SIM Card or iPhone to allow the continuous streaming of any audio/ video content, enable Voice over Internet (VoIP), P2P or file sharing or use them in such a way that adversely impacts the service to other customers of O2 or The Cloud.

If O2 reasonably suspect you are not acting in accordance with this policy O2 reserves the right to impose further charges or disconnect your tariff at any time, having attempted to contact you first.

How do I set up my iPhone to use The Cloud's network of hotspots?

There is one time authentication process to follow when you first visit a Cloud hotspot. Simply follow the steps below to complete this authentication.

  • Ensure you have a Wi-Fi connection. Check the upper left corner of the screen for the Wi-Fi symbol.
  • From the iPhone main menu page, select the 'Safari' icon which initiates a search for available Wi-Fi hotspots in your location.
  • If you are in coverage of a Cloud hotspot, you will be offered 'Wi-Fi Zone - The Cloud'. Select 'Wi-Fi Zone - The Cloud'
  • From Safari bookmarks, tap on a bookmark and this will take you to The Cloud iPhone home page.
  • Enter your Mobile Phone Number and select 'go'.
  • When Wi-Fi session is established, you will see 'welcome to The Cloud' and the session counter displays the session time. You can now begin your Wi-Fi browsing session!
Once you have completed these steps, your future use of Wi-Fi via The Cloud is seamless. All you will need to do is ensure you are in a Cloud hotspot and then start browsing, using You Tube or downloading a track from iTunes. It couldn't be easier.

How can I find out where The Cloud hotspots are?

You'll be able to find your nearest The Cloud hotspot by using our hotspot directory.

You can also access the hotspot directory on your iPhone. Go to Bookmarks > O2 Web.

Will the iPhone always use a Wi-Fi connection if available?

Yes, as long as you are within range of the Wi-Fi network and have access to it (a password may be needed), then iPhone will automatically join the network. If Wi-Fi is switched off or a Wi-Fi network is not within range, the iPhone will automatically switch to a GPRS or EDGE connection.

If there are multiple Wi-Fi networks within range, how do I choose a network?

When you are in range of networks that you have not connected to previously, you will get a notification of the available networks and an opportunity to select the one that you want to join.

My iPhone has connected to one Wi-Fi network but I want to use another one. How do I do this?

On the iPhone tap Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi. The iPhone will scan for available networks. When the network you want to connect to appears in the list just select it and then choose Join. If a password is required you will be prompted for it at this point.

How do I connect my iPhone to a Wi-Fi network that doesn't broadcast its SSID?

On the iPhone tap Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi > Other. Enter the network name (this is the SSID). If the network requires a password, choose Security, tap the type of security the network uses, and enter the password.

Note: you must already know the SSID, password, and security type to connect to this type of network.

My home Wi-Fi connection uses MAC filtering. How do I connect my iPhone to this?

First you must find out what the MAC address of your iPhone is. A MAC address is an ID built into the hardware of the device.

On the iPhone tap Settings > General > About > Wi-Fi Address. This will display the MAC address. It will look something like 00:03:93:XX:XX:XX. Write this ID down.

You should now add this to the Wi-Fi router you are connecting to. How to do this will vary across different types of Wi-Fi routers. You should contact your ISP or Wi-Fi router provider for support with this.

Does the iPhone support additional levels of security for a home Wi-Fi connection?

Yes, the iPhone supports WEP, WPA and WPA2 security.

How do I turn Wi-Fi off?

On the iPhone tap Settings > General > Network. Tap Wi-Fi to switch on or off.

All my settings are correct but my iPhone still won't work with my home Wi-Fi connection

For some home Wi-Fi connections it may be necessary to add the DNS addresses of your Internet Service Provider to the iPhone.

Firstly you need to find out what the DNS addresses of your ISP/broadband provider are. You may need to access the settings in your Wi-Fi router or contact your ISP to find these.

Once you have the DNS settings of your ISP, on the iPhone go to Settings > General > Network > Wi-Fi.

Select the blue arrow next to the network you are connected to. Select DNS. Change the IP Address to the DNS addresses of your Internet Service Provider.
