The Department for Education’s Get Help with Technology scheme

We’ve joined the Department for Education’s Get Help with Technology scheme, providing extra data to help with home schooling for families who are struggling to connect during lockdown. Take a look at our FAQs below or find out how to apply.

Who is eligible for the free extra data?

How much extra data will I receive?

Eligible customers on Pay Monthly or Pay As You Go will receive 40GB of extra data each month. As a guide, 40GB is roughly enough to browse the internet for 440 hours or watch 1600 hours of video content.

How will I know if my application is accepted or declined?

If the application is accepted, we’ll send you a text confirming your Bolt On has been added. If the application is declined, you’ll hear from the Department for Education – either through your school or trust where you applied.

How long will it take to add the extra data after filling in application?

We’ll aim to apply the data Bolt Ons within two weeks of receiving the data files from the Department for Education.

Are there restrictions on what I can use my extra data for?

Your extra data should be used for its intended purpose only; to support children with at-home learning resources and schooling.

What other communications will I receive?

We’ll send you a confirmation text when your Bolt On’s been added, as well as text notifications when you’ve used 80% and 100% of your allowance.

Who will receive the communications, the account holder or the mobile number receiving the extra data?

We’ll send these texts to the mobile number receiving the extra data.

When will the extra data offering be ending?

Extra data will be available until 31 July 2021. We’ll review this with the Department for Education in line with national COVID-19 restrictions.

Will any unused data roll over to next month?

No, it won’t. You’ll be given another 40GB to use during the next month.

FAQs for Pay Monthly customers

Will the extra data Bolt On show on my bill?

Yes, this may show on your bill as two 20GB Bolt Ons or one 40GB Bolt On.

Will the extra data be added on a set day or when my next bill cycle begins?

We’ll add the data Bolt On when we receive the request from the Department for Education, so this could happen anytime during your bill cycle.

Will I get notified when my data is running low?

Yes, you’ll get a notification when you’ve used 80% and 100% of your data.

Can the extra data Bolt On be split across multiple months/bill cycles?

If your Bolt On is added mid-cycle then you’ll get the full 40GB data allowance for the remainder of that bill cycle.

How can I track how much of the extra data I’ve used?

You can sign in to My O2 at any time to see your data usage.

How will I know that the extra data has been added?

We’ll send you a confirmation text when the data’s been added to your account. You’ll also be able to see this in My O2.

I have a business account, will I be eligible for the extra data?

O2 customers with business contracts are not eligible for the extra data. Visit the Get help with technology gov.uk page for more information.

FAQs for Pay As You Go customers

Will the data be added on a set day or in line with my anniversary date?

We’ll add your extra data when we receive the request from the Department for Education, so this could happen anytime, not necessarily on your anniversary date.

How do I check my balance and data remaining?

You can check your balance at any time by texting BALANCE to 20202.

Will the 40GB extra data be used before my Big Bundle?

We’ll use your existing core tariff first, then the extra 40GB. If you use up the extra 40GB, you’ll then revert to any other data allowances you have available before moving to your standard rates.

How will I know that the extra data has been added?

We’ll send you a confirmation text when your extra data has been added. You can also check by texting BALANCE to 20202.
