What is Bluebook?

It lets you back up the names and numbers in your phone book, online. It's free.

Have you switched off Bluebook?

No, we haven't. You can still back up your contacts on Bluebook, but you can't back up texts and picture messages anymore. We've closed your text folders and photo albums. If you have already requested a copy of your texts and photos, you can download it to your computer by signing into Bluebook before 1 August 2011.

How do I get my old texts and photos out of Bluebook?

If you have already requested a copy of your texts and photos, you can download it to your computer by signing into Bluebook before 1 August 2011.

What do I need before starting to download my texts and photos to my computer?

You'll need a few things before you can download your texts and photos, and view them on your computer.

  • You're o2.co.uk user name and password. Go to registration.o2.co.uk/Reminder/RemindUsernamePassword if you've forgotten it.
  • A computer running Windows or Mac OS.
  • A fast Internet connection like home broadband. You're better off not using mobile broadband when downloading your texts and photos.
  • A supported Web browser. Internet Explorer 6, Safari 5 or Mozilla Firefox 3.5 or later versions of these browsers work.

Where do I find the texts that I backed up by sending to 40202?

To see the texts that you backed up by sending to 40202, open 'MessagesAndPhotos' in your browser and click 'Other messages'. If you want to see them in a text editor, go into the folder called 'MESSAGESFOLDER' and open the file called 'MMS'.

Where do I find the texts that I moved to folders that I created?

To see the texts that you moved to folders that you created, open 'MessagesAndPhotos' in your browser and click 'Other messages'. If you want to see them in a text editor, go into the folder called 'MESSAGESFOLDER' and open the file called 'MMS'.

My browser shows an error message when I try to open 'MessagesAndPhotos'. What do I do?

You might see an error message when you try to open 'MessagesAndPhotos' in your browser or when you click 'Inbox', 'Sent items' or 'Other messages', for example 'XML Parsing Error: not well-formed' or 'The document Inbox cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents'. This is because there are unusual characters in some of your texts and your browser does not know how to display it.

If you are using the Mozilla Firefox browser, try to open 'MessagesAndPhotos' using Internet Explorer version 6 or later. You can also view the contents of 'Inbox', 'Sent items' and 'Other messages' using a text editor, for example Wordpad on a PC or TextEdit on a Mac. Go into 'MESSAGESFOLDER' and open 'Inbox', 'Sent_Items' and 'MMS'.

'Inbox' contains the texts that you received when you had the Bluebook automatic text copy switched on. 'Sent_Items' contains the texts that you sent when you had the Bluebook automatic text copy switched on. And 'MMS' contains your picture messages, texts that you uploaded manually by sending to 40202, and texts that you moved to folders that you created in Bluebook.

What do I do if I am having problems viewing my photos in my browser?

You can access your photos directly if you are having problems viewing them in your browser. Go into 'UPLOADEDMEDIAFolder' and 'MMSMEDIAFOLDER'. You'll find the photos that you uploaded manually from your computer in 'UPLOADEDMEDIAFolder'. And you'll find the photos from your picture messages in 'MMSMEDIAFOLDER'.

What if I've forgotten my user name and password?

Go to registration.o2.co.uk/Reminder/RemindUsernamePassword.

What happens to my texts and photos if I don't ask for them back?

We'll permanently destroy all texts and photos in Bluebook after 1 August 2011.

Can you keep my text folders and photo albums open for me?

Sorry, no. We're switching them off for everyone.

How can I back up my texts and photos?

There are non-O2 services you could use, and some phones come with their own software, too (like Nokia PC Suite).

Can you see my old messages?

No. When they're gone, they're gone.

Why did you close the text and photo back-up service?

There's just too much for us to store.

Nothing. They'll still be there, and they'll still work the same way.

Will I still be able to back up my contacts?

Yes.
