Love app-tually

Did you know that seahorses hold tails to show each other that they’re ready for romance? Or that albatross couples develop their own unique language? But just because love is all around in nature, it doesn’t mean you can’t get a helping hand from the world of tech. Take a look at our guide to the best apps to help you land a hot date.

Steps to success

Find the right app

Choose as many apps as you want from our guide.

Make the first move

Don’t be shy – everyone on the app is looking for love.

Don’t be cynical

Plenty of couples meet online, so don’t underestimate dating apps.

Tinder

You’ve probably heard of Tinder, the smartphone app that revolutionised dating by getting users to swipe right to show interest in a potential match, and left to pass them by. It’s now one of the most popular dating apps, with around 12 million matches worldwide every day. Tinder is recommended for its simple layout and volume of users.

Free. Available on iOS and Android.

Tastebuds

If music is a big part of your life, then Tastebuds is the dating app for you. The idea is to find you a match based on your taste in music. You can connect it to your Facebook, Spotify or Last.fm account, or just type in some of your favourite artists. Once you’ve matched with someone, you’ll already have something in common to chat about.

Free. Available on iOS and Android.

Happn

Meeting through Happn is almost like meeting the traditional way – by being in the same place at the same time. The app uses your phone’s GPS to alert you when another Happn member crosses your path within a radius of 250 metres. In other words, it matches you with people who hang out where you do. So it’s perfect for finding someone who likes the same kind of stuff you’re into.

Free. Available on iOS and Android.

OkCupid

OkCupid is determined to find you the right match by getting to know your personality. So it’s packed full of in-depth personality quizzes to help you find someone you’re totally compatible with. Just sit back and let the algorithms work their magic. OkCupid might have launched all the way back in 2004, but it’s still going strong, with over a million app installs per week.

Free. Available on iOS and Android.

Bumble

Bumble runs in the same swipe left/swipe right format as Tinder – but with one big difference. Once you’ve matched with someone, you only have 24 hours to get in touch before the match disappears. And only the woman can make the first move, unless it’s a same-sex connection, when either person can get in touch first. The aim to change the unwritten rules of online dating and take the awkwardness out of making the first move.

Free. Available on iOS and Android.

Bristlr

Obsessed with beards? Well, you’re in good company. Bristlr is an app that connects people who have beards with people who love them. It even provides a beard-rating option, so you can see how a potential date’s beard stacks up. Admittedly, Bristlr was created as a joke, but there are now 150,000 users looking for beardy love. And even if you’re not a beard fan, just remember – they tend to grow on you.

Free. Available on iOS and Android.
