FAQs

What is data poverty, and how do we know if someone is affected by it?

Data poverty exists when people can't afford enough mobile or broadband data to meet their essential online needs. Internet access is now vital in everyday life, so not being able to afford it is a challenge for individuals, families and communities.

What is the National Databank?

The National Databank provides free mobile data, texts and calls to people in data poverty. Over 650 organisations have joined the National Databank so far. These consist of UK charities and community organisations.

Those accessing the National Databank may be cut off from basic daily activities most of us take for granted. These can include job interviews, contacting loved ones and essential public services such as healthcare.

Why is Virgin Media O2 supporting the National Databank?

Virgin Media O2 aims to connect one million digitally excluded people by the end of 2025. Read more about our Better Connections Plan. As part of this goal, we've committed enough free O2 Pay As You Go connectivity to the National Databank to connect 500,000 people by 2025. However, we rely on the support of community groups to distribute it to people who need it. They need our help, so we've registered 10 O2 stores in areas where we need more support distributing connectivity.
