Black Friday is a shopping phenomenon where retailers drop their prices dramatically, allowing shoppers to bag their Christmas deals early.
Black Friday in 2020 is Friday 27 November.
It all started back in 1950s America, when people began calling in sick to work on the day after Thanksgiving (which is always held on the fourth Thursday in November), giving themselves a nice four-day weekend to get a head start on their Christmas shopping and making it one of the year’s most profitable days.
The name ‘Black Friday’ originated in 1966, when the Philadelphia Police Department used the phrase to describe the traffic jams, crowding and violence in the city’s shops. Not impressed with the police’s negativity about the day, retailers adopted the Black Friday name and turned it into a bargain bonanza, offering heavy discounts for that day only. And that’s how Black Friday was born.
