Connection Manager Functionality

If you plan to be, or are already an O2 data card user, then we recommend that you choose SIM authentication.   To use SIM authentication you’ll need O2 Connection Manager. O2 Connection Manager is software that helps you to manage your cellular and WLAN data connections.  It is free to download and makes logging on to the O2 WLAN service very simple.  You insert your data card into your laptop and the software reads your SIM details and authenticates you on to the WLAN service.  It’s as simple as that.

You can still use the O2 Connection Manager software for voice authentication but this time you’ll need to take a call on your mobile number to start your WLAN session.  It’s a great alternative to SIM authentication if you’re not planning on using an O2 data card and is simple and easy to use.

Access to the hotspot directory

The Hotspot directory can be accessed via connection manager software when the user is on and off-line.  When on-line the user will be prompted to download the updated version of the directory when it becomes available.

Support for WLAN security

Connection Manager supports WEP and WPA encryption.

Session and pre-paid timer

Connection Manager provides two counters.  The session timer (always available regardless of network or tariff) records the length of the current Cellular or WLAN data connection.  The pre-paid timer tells the WLAN user how much time they have left on their pre-paid tariff.  This counter provides a 5 minute warning before the tariff expires.

Ability to quick start applications

Connection Manager has 4 customisable buttons from which the user can quick start applications of their choice ie auto-start their Outlook client or web browser.

On-line help

A full on-line help facility is accessible from within connection manager.  In addition to the help facility the user can search by an index of features or by key word.

Software upgrade facility

When a new version of O2 Connection Manager is available the user will be prompted to upgrade.  If the upgrade option is taken, all profile information will be transferred to the upgraded version of the software.
