If you are an O2 Home Broadband customer or an O2 laptop customer, you will already have your copy of McAfee Security software and the O2 Assistant - you will not need to go through this process.
Mobile Broadband customers please read on.
Before you begin downloading please read the following instructions. To get your copy of McAfee Security software and the O2 Assistant you will have to download these over the Internet. Don't worry, it's not complicated and we will take you through the process.
However we do recommend that you download these using your home broadband connection as it will be much faster and it won't reduce your monthly mobile broadband allowance.
Click on each of the 'McAfee Security' and 'O2 Assistant' tabs in turn to download your software.

- By email
You may have received an email from us. We’ll send this to the address you gave us when you set up your O2 Mobile Broadband contract. - From O2 Connection Manager:
a. Plug in your USB modem and connect online using O2 Mobile Broadband.
b. Click on the O2 Connection Manager icon on the bottom right hand of your screen.
c. Click on the envelope icon to open your SMS Message Centre. Your username and password will be in your SMS inbox.
Tip: your username will be in the format 447XXXXXXXXX@o2.co.uk – the first part is actually the number of your USB modem where you can send and receive text messages.
Remember, your username and password are unique to you. You must not pass them on to anyone else and you should keep them safe.
Downloading the software
1. Now make sure you are connected to your home broadband rather than using O2 Mobile Broadband. The McAfee Security software is very large and the download would use a lot of your monthly allowance.
2. To start the download please click the 'Download Now' button, and it will start automatically.
3. When asked to 'Run' or 'Save' this file, please click on 'Run' and the download will continue. This is a very large file – over 90 Megs – and could take up to twenty minutes on a slow home broadband connection.
Installing the software
1. Once the file has been downloaded, Microsoft® will then double check that you still want to run McAfee Security software, click on 'Run' again. An installation wizard will then guide you through the process. It will take you about five minutes to set it up. It is not complicated and will not ask you for any personal details.
2. If you already have any other antivirus software running on your PC, you will be prompted to uninstall this and replace it with this version of McAfee Security software that you have just downloaded. As you cannot have two different antivirus software running on your PC at the same time, you will first have to remove the old one. Just follow the on screen instructions. Your PC may reboot during this process – don't worry, this is normal practice.
Tip: if you already have McAfee Security software the installation wizard will overwrite the software automatically.
3. The McAfee Security software will then start an automatic scan of your PC to detect and address any virus or malware problems
Registering your software
1. To register, go to the McAfee Security Centre or right click on the McAfee Security icon in the system tray and select 'Product Setup'. From here you will be prompted to activate your McAfee Security software and provide your username and password.
2. Read and accept the license agreement and press 'Continue'.

Tip: if you're having problems finding this don't worry, after a few days we will automatically remind you.
3. You've got McAfee Security software for the life of your contract.
Tip: For trouble shooting or tips go to o2.co.uk/mcafee
O2 Assistant is a piece of software that does three things:
- It spots and fixes problems (by itself, or with your help).
- It checks for updates and messages from O2.
-
It helps our customer service team fix any problems.
O2 Assistant doesn’t affect anything else on your computer. And it won’t send us any information about you or any websites you’ve looked at. It works best if you always have it running on your laptop.
