Acting sustainably means being smarter about the way we do things. Saving money. Making the most of limited resources. Like our parent company, Telefónica, we have a strong commitment to becoming more sustainable and to helping our customers and partners do the same.

What's O2 doing to look after the environment?

Our biggest impact is energy. We want to use less of it. And make power from renewable sources a bigger part of what we do use. Of course, energy efficiency is important, helping us move closer to being a truly sustainable business. We're also working hard to reduce waste at source and make use of it as a resource.

O2 Recycle.

We lead the mobile sector in the recovery and recycling of used handsets. We process and recover electronic waste in line with regulations. Precious and other metals are reclaimed during the recycling process. Packaging doesn't go to landfill: it's either recycled or incinerated for energy creation.

Eco rating.

We're the first network in the UK to share information about the social and environmental impact of the mobiles we sell. That helps you make more informed choices. Think of it as a 'Fairtrade' style grading for your phone!

ISO 14001.

Our ISO 14001 environmental management system is consistently praised by our BSI auditors.

Energy.

We were the first mobile operator to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard for carbon reductions. Not just now, but year on year.

Tomorrow's workspace.

Moving to our new headquarters in Slough has helped us reduce our impact on the environment.

Compliance with environmental legislation.

We comply with UK environmental legislation in areas like environmental protection, batteries, waste electrical and electronic equipment, use of hazardous substances, and hazardous waste. More than that, we're driving our supply chain to go beyond compliance with regulation and deliver real leadership.

Supply chain.

We're helping our suppliers minimise the impact of their activities. Just a couple of examples: we're sourcing recycled paper for all our marketing material, and working on energy-saving programmes with major network equipment suppliers.

What's our approach to social responsibility?

Our activities have a social impact. We want to make sure it's a positive one. We want to bring the benefits of mobile communications and the internet to as many people as possible. Without ignoring the associated privacy risks and the possibility of social exclusion. And although we want to provide best value, we take social and environmental factors into account when working with our suppliers. And we want to give something back to the wider community.

Equality and diversity

We know the success of a business depends on its people. We want to build a workforce that reflects the diversity of our customers. We comply with international, European and national regulation and voluntary codes of practice. And work hard to create an environment where everyone has an equal chance to succeed.

Think Big for Young People

Funding, training and support to help people aged 13-25 get their projects off the ground. O2 Learn is Britain's biggest classroom with a library of revision lessons from the best teachers in the country.

We've teamed up with Childnet to work on ways to help protect children. That means making mobiles a worry-free zone for parents, teachers and anyone else looking after children.

Supply chain

We work with our suppliers to make sure social factors are considered at every stage of the supply chain. These include labour standards, health and safety and business ethics. We ask our suppliers to comply with our own policies and standards. And encourage them to apply similar principles to their own buying decisions and processes.

We work with social enterprises and support the remarkable work they do: achieving social change, contributing to the economy and creating employment.
