To most people O2 means mobile phones, SMS and a great network however O2 has been a leading network player in M2M for over 8 years. We partner with the leading providers of M2M solutions to create industry specific tools to make Safety and Security efficient and cost effective.
What is it?
M2M goes on all around us – a sophisticated system of wireless communication keeping business critical applications running. The advantage of wireless communication over fixed line is its extensive reach (both geographically and numerically) to devices without the cost of physical connections.
In Safety and Security the main areas of M2M technology are used in protecting property, vehicles and people
Far cheaper to install and maintain than traditional fixed alarms, or used as a back up for when the fixed line fails, wireless alarms are increasing in UK usage.
Pre-defined ‘pinging’ communication is used to periodically check the alarm status (you don’t want to find out your alarm system is inactive once you’ve been burgled, and currently only 30% of alarms in the UK are monitored) at a very low data usage charge to give you a cable free security system. Like traditional alarms, alerts can be sent to any location desired.
Security is offered to all types of vehicle from cars to fleet HGVs. Through driver identification on entering the vehicle (via bluetooth/smartcard recognition) and GPS based tracking once moving (Geo-fencing) M2M gives a new level of protection to your fleet. Silent alarms are triggered if any aspect is breached and sent to your security firm/police for immediate action. Vehicles can also be remotely immobilised through linking SIM to the electronics and stopping the offender in their tracks.
Already favoured by leading insurance companies in the UK (some of whom offer reduced premiums on tracked vehicles) this gives real control to vehicle owners.
Employees are the most valued asset of most companies and their safety is integral to the smooth running of businesses. With increasing reports of anti-social behaviour and the vulnerability of lone-workers in remote or hazardous locations it is every employer’s responsibility to ensure they are providing reasonable care for their workforce. Lone worker solutions range from mobile phones with GPS tracking capability through to ID badges using GSM/GPRS ‘panic buttons’ to send an immediate alert for assistance.
