Although definitions may vary slightly between research bodies and industry users, the two key areas that make up M2M can be understood as:
“Telemetry” :
- The flow of information to and from a ‘Fixed Asset’.
- Black Boxes containing a communications device which allows the flow of data between 2 machines – e.g. meters, alarms, vending machines
“Telematics” :
- The flow of information to and from a ‘Moving Asset’.
- Black Boxes containing a Communications device which allows the flow of information to and from a central computer. Telematics is today mostly data but includes voice for navigation and other driver assistance services.
