What is it?

M2M goes on all around us – a sophisticated system of wireless communication keeping business critical applications running remotely.  The fact that O2 is wireless makes it  a truly mobile tool – ideal for moving assets.  Recognising this advantage,   a growing number of vehicles on the UK’s roads are already fitted with an O2 SIM sending and receiving information in real time.

The benefits of this technology fall into two key areas:

Monitoring business vehicles via the GSM/GPRS network gives the fleet manager complete visibility and control of these valuable assets once they’re long outside of the depot gates.

By sending reports at pre-defined regular intervals, or sending alarms when a defined threshold has been breached gives both real time and historic information to make sure vehicle efficiency is maximised:

• Stolen Vehicle Recovery – if a vehicle moves outside of it’s expected hours an alarm is triggered, and the vehicle location tracked. Configured correctly, the vehicle can even be immobilised when the SIM detects abnormal activity
• Driver monitoring – poor driving habits lead to expensive repairs. Track pedal activity, speed and fuel consumption and address areas of waste
• Vehicle monitoring – see where your fleet is, how long until it reaches it’s destination and where the most efficient next pick up/delivery should be sent to
• Load monitoring – ensure the load you’re carrying stays at the right temperature, is not tampered with in between load and delivery,   and reaches the right destination for receipt

All of these aspects can be tracked to give you real time efficiency of job scheduling as well as historic reporting for continuous improvement to your profit line.

Split between in-vehicle and portable devices, navigation units are dependent upon GPS location tracking with a GSM/GPRS SIM to communicate turn by turn information either visually or orally to the driver.

UK sales are rapidly increasing in the consumer and business market as drivers make the change from dangerous map-reading whilst driving to allowing an intelligent service to route them to their destination.

Add to this intelligence, a further layer of real time traffic information and journeys change from frustrating down time to a reason to be smug!

Using traffic information recorded from other vehicles (floating data capture) and an extensive series of cameras along the UK roads (fixed data capture) drivers can access immediate, time saving information.

By dialling traffic information lines (1200) and selecting the road of interest, or by fitting a navigation system that can proactively alert drivers of congestion and alternative routes, the frustration of sitting in queues of traffic is eliminated and meetings/deliveries are made on time.
